The Science of Meditation

Peter McLoughlin explains the latest scientific insights on Meditation. These studies are explained in a way that is accessible to all.

The talk includes discussion of neurological insights, such as changes in the function, connectivity and structure of the brain, as well as molecules, genetics and gene expression.  Peter concludes by explaining the various benefits of meditation that have been scientifically demonstrated.


Meditation and The School

Exploring the inner life and making it practical for daily living, requires a method for cultivating inner stillness and peace. The School of Economic Science has included mantra meditation in its Practical Philosophy programme since the 1960s and has initiated thousands of students into the practice. The School’s founder Leon Maclaren has been described as playing a significant part in meditation being practised so widely in the west.

Mantra meditation involves listening to a single, specific, sound or word repeating gently in the mind. It is simple and easy to practise within the demands of ordinary everyday living. It is natural and based on the conscious use of attention.

Peter McLoughlin is a student of Practical Philosophy in the North West and has been practising meditation for over twenty years. He has a master’s degree in medical sciences, specialising in medicinal chemistry, and is a science teacher.
