The Economics of Plenty
Is our glass half empty or half full?
The notion of scarcity amidst limitless human desires is the bedrock of conventional economic thought. On this are laid fundamental economic models such as the law of supply and demand. National deficits, impoverished families, inadequate housing and environmental crises appear to support a sense of half emptiness.
Could our framing of the economic world in terms of scarcity be part of the problem? Would a different perspective help us to see a way forward for a more equitable and sustainable future?
Richard Glover will explore ways that a sense of plenty can bring fresh perspectives to our economic understanding.
Richard Glover has been a keen student of both Economics with Justice and Philosophy at the School of Philosophy and Economic Science for many years, and has headed its Economics Faculty for the past six. His ongoing interests include the question of how we can rediscover our way towards the common good and how philosophy can offer practical help to address today’s economic, social, and environmental issues.
His professional life has been as a consultant in the world of electronics and technology.
