WRP2024#03 - 06 February 2025: Economics
Economics: Justice and the Real World
From Plato to Amartya Sen, philosophers, economists and thinkers have wondered about justice – what it is and how it applies in practice. So what is justice? And how does it apply in today’s world?
This retreat will study what some of the greatest minds have had to say about justice, especially economic justice, and consider how it is relevant to 21st Century economics and life.
Meet the great minds – Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Aquinas, Adam Smith, Henry George, John Rawls, Amartya Sen - and join in the perennial search for the principles of a just and equitable world. Study materials will be provided.
Study – reflect – discuss – formulate
in the peaceful and beautiful surroundings of Waterperry House and Gardens. 3rd – 6th February 2025
Retreat Leader, Ian Mason, is a barrister (non-practising) who has participated in the United Nations Harmony with Nature project and has long experience studying and teaching practical philosophy and economics-with-justice in the School. He is the author of ‘One World, One Wealth’ – a collection of essays on Economics-with-Justice and Harmony with Nature. Ian says: “The vision of Economics with Justice is a vision of the human ecology as an integral part of the universal ecology and of all human beings finding fulfilment through full participation and a just and proper share of the abundance that this planet can provide”.
