25th Anniversary of the Waterperry Frescoes
The Waterperry Frescoes, we believe, are the largest buon fresco cycle to be painted in Britain for 500 years. Over 25 artists, painters and sculptors, worked on this project for five years; all students in the School volunteering at weekends, plus from these a small design team of paid artists working during the week. The artists spent three years learning the demanding techniques of buon fresco before they could begin but nothing prepared them for the challenges of working on such a big scale. The Tree of Creation fresco is over 35ft high, not big by Giotto’s standards but pretty daunting for us! At any one time there could be plasterers, colour mixers, gilders, tracers, pouncers and painters all working together; it was like recreating an Italian Renaissance workshop in rural Oxfordshire.
